Babar, Shaheen Among Top Retentions As Franchises Confirm Squads Before PSL 2024 Draft

All six Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises have confirmed their retained cricketers ahead of the upcoming PSL 2024 player’s draft. The draft itself will be taking place at Lahore’s National Cricket Academy on December 13.

Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi were all retained by their respective franchises, thus becoming the top draws from the retention phase.

PSL 2024 franchises announce player retentions

With a custody limit of a maximum of eight players, as many as five PSL 2024 franchises have made full use of their retentions. Multan Sultans, on the other hand, retained only seven of their cricketers from the previous edition of the tournament.

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars retained captain and star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, alongside fellow senior man Haris Rauf and overseas T20 veterans Rashid Khan and Sikandar Raza respectively, in the Silver and Gold categories. Here is a look at all eight players retained by Lahore Qalandars franchise ahead of the PSL 2024 draft:

Lahore Qalandars: Shaheen Shah Afridi (Platinum), Haris Rauf (Brand Ambassador) and David Wiese (both Diamond), Sikandar Raza, Abdullah Shafique and Zaman Khan (all Gold), Mirza Tahir Baig (Successful relegation request) and Rashid Khan (both Silver).

Islamabad United, boosted by the trade of Naseem Shah, retained the young speedster alongside Shadab Khan and diamond-category Imad Wasim. Here is a look at each Islamabad United cricketer retained by the franchise:

Islamabad United: Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah (both Platinum), Imad Wasim (Mentor) and Azam Khan (both Diamond), Faheem Ashraf (Brand Ambassador), Alex Hales and Colin Munro (all Gold), Rumman Raees (Successful relegation request in Silver).

Multan Sultans will continue with Pakistan senior man Mohammad Rizwan as well as with Diamond-categories Khushdil Shah and Usama Mir. A look at an entire list of Multan Sultans' retentions is as follows:

Multan Sultans: Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed (both Platinum), Khushdil Shah and Usama Mir (both Diamond), Abbas Afridi (Gold), Ihsanullah (Brand Ambassador, Silver), Faisal Akram (Emerging).

Shan Masood and Shoaib Malik will continue another season with Karachi Kings along with Hasan Ali and English star James Vince. A look at the eight Karachi Kings players retained for the PSL 2024 season:

Karachi Kings: James Vince and Hasan Ali (Diamond), Shan Masood (Brand Ambassador), Shoaib Malik (Mentor) and Tabraiz Shamsi (all Gold), Mir Hamza (Successful relegation request) and Muhammad Akhlaq (both Silver), Muhammad Irfan Khan (Emerging).

Quetta Gladiators retained Sarfaraz Ahmed as well as a number of overseas stars. Remarkably, one of their overseas retentions is Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who continues to attain full recovery from his hamstring injury. A look at all players retained by Quetta Gladiators:

Quetta Gladiators: Rilee Rossouw (Platinum), Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Jason Roy and Wanindu Hasaranga (all Diamond), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Brand Ambassador) Abrar Ahmed and Mohammad Hasnain (all Gold), Will Smeed (Silver).

Milestone man and Pakistan legend Babar Azam is set to continue another season at the Peshawar Zalmi camp after he was roped in by the franchise prior to PSL 2023. Here is a list of eight players retained by Peshawar Zalmi management for the 2024 edition of the tournament:
