The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will likely announce a new national captain for the T20I team ahead of their upcoming home series against New Zealand.
Shaheen Afridi, who replaced Babar Azam as Pakistan’s T20I captain late last year, recently coped a 1-4 series defeat in New Zealand this January in his first stint as national leader.
The calls for another captaincy change comes on the backdrop of Pakistan’s preparations for this year’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June, set to be played in the West Indies and the United States.
In a bid to groom themselves for the multi-nation ICC event, the ‘Men in Green’ are lined up to play 12 T20I matches against New Zealand, Ireland and England over the next couple of months.
PCB to new T20I captain; Babar, Rizwan frontrunners
As per recent reports, Mohammad Rizwan has emerged as one of the frontrunners to replace Shaheen Afridi as Pakistan’s new T20I captain.
Moreover, earlier this week, a certain report indicated that several PCB officials are contemplating to reappoint Babar Azam back as leader for all formats.
As of now, the Pakistan selection committee is poised to announce a new T20I captain in time for Pakistan’s upcoming five-match series against New Zealand at home.
The series, along with subsequent fixtures against Ireland and England, serves as Pakistan’s final set of dress rehearsal for this year’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Ever since Babar Azam was stripped from his all-format captaincy role, the Pakistan cricket team sustained a 0-3 larruping in a three-match Test series in Australia under Shan Masood.
Moreover, newly-appointed T20I skipper Shaheen Afridi also led the national side to a 1-4 series defeat in New Zealand earlier in January this year.
