In a surprising turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating the reappointment of Babar Azam as captain for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, set to kick off on June 2. This move comes following a lackluster performance by Shaheen Afridi, who had taken over the reins after Babar's resignation post the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup debacle.

Shaheen Afridi's appointment as the T20I captain was initially met with optimism, given his successful leadership stint with the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.

However, his captaincy failed to inspire the national team during the recent five-match series against New Zealand, which Pakistan lost 4-1. Reports from Cricket Pakistan had earlier hinted at the possibility of Shaheen's captaincy being under scrutiny.

While Mohammad Rizwan emerged as a frontrunner for the captaincy role, recent developments have shifted the focus back to Babar Azam. Sources suggest that PCB officials are edging closer to finalizing Babar as the preferred candidate to lead the team once again.

Babar's earlier relinquishment of the white-ball captaincy had triggered a series of changes in Pakistan's cricket leadership, including Shan Masood's appointment as Test captain. However, with the change in PCB leadership, including Mohsin Naqvi taking over as chairman, there seems to be a reconsideration of the team's direction.

Behind the scenes, it's revealed that Babar Azam harbors reservations stemming from his previous removal as captain and seeks assurances from the board before agreeing to take on the responsibility again. This hesitation underscores the need for transparent communication and alignment between the captain and the board to ensure the team's success on the international stage. As the T20 World Cup approaches, all eyes are on the PCB's final decision regarding the captaincy, which could potentially reshape their future.
