Australia’s path towards 2023 World Cup has been marred with nothing but injuries and series defeats. Despite having taken a 2-0 lead in South Africa earlier this month, they slumped to three successive 100-plus run defeats to concede the series to the hosts.

Travelling to India to wrap up their pre-World Cup 2023 preparations, team’s bowling reserves took a further beating both on and off the field, as a Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma-less Team India convincingly walloped them to secure their series with a game to spare.

To make matters worse for the visitors, pacers Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis have already been sent back home midway into the series in a bid to overcome their injuries.

With player injuries and underperforming seniors in the side, Cricket Australia is set to make some tough decisions for their World Cup 2023 squad, set to be announced in a couple of days’ time.

Injuries galore ahead of WC 2023 squad announcement

Several Australian senior members Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc as well as skipper Pat Cummins all recently coped their share of pre-World Cup injuries, however, are likely candidates to make it to team’s line-up for the tournament. Maxwell was even hitting the nets and raring to go against India when he takes field for the third ODI in Rajkot.

Travis Head, however, is yet to recover from his fractured hand, the one he sustained in South Africa. Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis have become the latest set of injured Australian players, as both were sent back home midway from their series in India to nurse their hamstring and groin injuries.

As per ICC’s deadline, all teams must present their World Cup 2023 squads by September 27.

It remains to be seen if the Australian management will elect injured Travis Head for the tournament, considering his splendid run in recent ODIs and his opening diligence with David Warner.

Regardless, Australia’s forthcoming dead-rubber third ODI against India remains their last crack in assessing their possible team combination for the cricketing carnival next month.
