Brief Scores: India (1st innings): 336-6 (93 overs) [Yashasvi Jaiswal: 179* (257), Shubman Gill: 34 (46); Rehan Ahmed 2/61 (16), Shoaib Bashir 2/100 (28)] by stumps on Day 1.

Team India took early advantage of the second Test against England by stacking up over 300 runs on an extended 93-over opening day at Vizag’s Dr. Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium.

Jaiswal holds innings together with career-best score

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, captain Rohit Sharma himself failed to reap the benefits of the opening day’s batting friendly conditions, as he was entrapped by English debutant Shoaib Bashir for just 14 inside the first hour of play.

His partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, guarded one end of the crease with utmost precision until stumps. After Sharma’s early dismissal, Jaiswal shared 49 runs with Shubman Gill (34), 90 runs with Shreyas Iyer (27), 70 runs with Indian debutant Rajat Patidar (32) and another 52 runs with all-rounder Axar Patel (27) for the subsequent four wickets.

Jaiswal himself ended up listing his second Test match century, and his first since the 171 he smacked against West Indies last year on debut. As the day progressed, the elegant left-handed opening batsman converted it into his magnum opus Test score, as he reached 179* by stumps on Day 1.

With unbeaten Jaiswal batting at the crease alongside latecomer Ravichandran Ashwin, Team India will have their innings resumed at 336-6 on the second morning.

Among the Englishmen, seasoned warhorse James Anderson curtailed Gill’s well-settled stay with a sizeable deflection at the stroke of Lunch. Spinners Shoaib Bashir, Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley also kept making timely breakthroughs throughout the course of the day as the trio collectively pocketed five Indian wickets.

After sizing up Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Bashir snapped Axar Patel while Ahmed accounted for the key scalps of Patidar and KS Bharat.
