Abbas Afridi, currently leading Pakistan in the Hong Kong Sixes, has made headlines with a record-breaking performance, smashing an incredible 55 runs off just 12 balls. Pakistan faced Kuwait in their Pool C match of the Hong Kong International Sixes Tournament on November 7, where Kuwait, batting first, set a daunting target of 124 runs to be chased in six overs, a challenging total for the format.
However, Afridi’s explosive knock powered Pakistan to victory with four wickets in hand.
Afridi blitzkrieg makes easy work of mammoth total
Batting first, Kuwait’s Meet Bhavsar scored an unbeaten 41 off 14 balls, hitting five sixes and two boundaries. Bilal Tahir added 24 runs from just six deliveries with four towering sixes, while Usman Patel remained not out on 31 from nine balls. Their efforts propelled Kuwait to 123 for 2, a seemingly unassailable total from six overs.
In response, Pakistan stumbled early as Muhammad Shahzad and Abdul Samad departed cheaply, leaving the team under pressure. But skipper Abbas Afridi turned the game on its head with a blistering innings of 55 off 12 balls at a strike rate of 458.33, including eight sixes. Khawaja Nafay contributed an unbeaten 25 off 11, while Shahid Aziz alongside Nafay guided Pakistan to a thrilling win.
Afridi also impressed with the ball, taking one wicket for 33 runs in his two overs. His all-round brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award. Known primarily as a fast bowler, Afridi has taken the tournament by storm with his batting heroics and will be hoping that such performances catch the selectors’ attention for a national call-up.
