Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced Sarfaraz Khan as the captain of the Mumbai team for the All India Buchi Babu Invitation Cricket Tournament.

With Ajinkya Rahane and Prithvi Shaw unavailable due to their commitments in England, Sarfaraz, a Test batsman, will lead the team. His brother, Musheer Khan, has also been included in the 17-member squad.

The team, selected by the Sanjay Patil-led senior selection committee, includes opener Akhil Herwadkar and middle-order batsman Siddhesh Lad, who previously played for Chhattisgarh and Goa respectively.

Mumbai will miss Rahane, who led the team to their 42nd Ranji Trophy title last season, as well as Prithvi Shaw and left-arm spinner Shams Mulani.

Sarfaraz's appointment as captain was seen as a natural choice, given his experience and seniority. The team has had a two-week preparation camp and played practice matches in Alur, near Bangalore.

Rahane is expected to return and lead the team in the Irani Cup on October 1. The inaugural Dr HD Kanga Cricket League games have been postponed due to rain and unplayable ground conditions.
