In cricket, batting and bowling are generally considered two of the important skillsets. However, fielding has emerged as a crucial aspect of modern-day cricket and has been gaining more attention with each passing year.

Recently, in the opening Test of the five-match series between India and England, the visitors dropped plenty of catches, which ultimately cost them big time. However, if we consider the catch efficiency in Tests from 2023 till the first session of the final day of the West Indies and Australia Test match, India are at the top of the list at 80.6 per cent.

The details of the catch efficiency were presented during the opening session of the final day at the Kensington Oval by the official broadcasters. According to it, the Kiwis were in the second position with a 78.5% catch efficiency rate.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are third on the list with 78.3%, while the World Test Champions, South Africa, are fourth with 75 percent efficiency rate. Surprisingly, Australia, one of the most consistent teams in world cricket, have a catch efficiency rate of 72.3%, which is even less than England's 74.5.

  • South Africa: 75.0%
  • England: 74.5%
  • Australia: 72.3%
  • Pakistan: 68%

Pakistan, Bangladesh and the West Indies occupy the bottom three positions, and it has shown in their results in the format, too. Pakistan, who are known for their knack for dropping catches, have an efficiency rate of 68, while West Indies are at the last position with 65.6%.

Thus, the catching efficiency more or less signifies the performance of the teams in the last two years. There is not much difference between the top-ranked teams, while the countries that are struggling in the format, like Pakistan and West Indies, have not been good at catching as well.
