Australia defeated the West Indies in a see-saw battle to capture the first Test match on Saturday. Chasing a tricky 301, the home side was never really in the hunt as they lost wickets at regular intervals and got bundled out for a paltry 141 to lose the match from a winning position.
Josh Hazlewood, the Australian seamer ran riot as he picked up a 5-wicket haul to seal the win. The pacer grabbed 5 for 43 in 12 overs as the home team crumbled in front of his relentless bowling. With the win, the visitors have opened their account in the WTC cycle and captain Pat Cummins joined Ben Stokes in an elite list.
Cummins joins Stokes in elite Test captaincy list
With the emphatic win over the West Indies, Cummins joined Stokes in an elite list. The Aussie captain now has 21 wins as Test captain, the same as England skipper, Stokes. However, the only difference is that Stokes achieved the feat in 34 games, while the Aussie captain took a game more (35) to bag the feat.
Interestingly, Stokes has a win percentage of 61, while Cummins has won 60% of his Test games as captain.
Pat Cummins' record as Australia Test captain
It was during the Australian summer of 2021 that Cummins became the Test captain, and since then, the Australian team has soared high in red-ball cricket. They won the Ashes in 2021 and followed it up with a win against Pakistan, away from home.
His biggest win as the Test captain came during the WTC final in 2023 where they thrashed the Indian side in a one-sided contest to seal his maiden ICC trophy as captain. He continued the winning formula against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as the Aussies reached yet another WTC finale but lost against the Proteas.
