The year 2025 will certainly be remembered for the underdog stories. So many teams, who have either never won a trophy or last tasted success years ago did miracles this year as 2025 has turned out to be a memorable sporting year. South Africa were the latest inductee in this special underdogs list.
They entered the WTC final against Australia as the second favourites and history was against them as the side last won an ICC event, way back in 1998. However, the Temba Bavuma led team showed grit and determination to capture their second-ever ICC event by 5 wickets.
However, this is not the only great sporting stories this year. Several sides have done absolutely magical stuffs this year and here are 4 Cricket teams who ended their trophy drought in 2025.

- The Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended their 18-year drought of winning the IPL this season. The team has been playing in the league since its inception in 2008 but they never tasted success before this season as the Red Army defeated Punjab Kings by 6 runs to capture their maiden IPL trophy.
- Hobart Hurricanes also ended their streak of not winning the BBL by destroying their opponent. Led by a marvellous century from Mitch Owen, Hurricanes blew away Sydney Thunder to win the match by 7 wickets and end their drought.
- The final team in the list is South Australia who won the domestic competition, Sheffield Shield for the first time in 29 years. It was their 14th domestic trophy but first since the 1995-96 season.
The year of trophy drought goes beyond Cricket
Interestingly, not only in Cricket but the underdog story also goes beyond Cricket. In Football, there were several teams who ended their drought. Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League and won a professional trophy for the first time since the 2008 season.
Crystal Palace won the FA Cup title by beating Manchester City and ended their 119 year long wait for a trophy. Similarly, Bologna in Italy won their first trophy in 51 years by defeating AC Milan in Coppa Italia.
Newcastle United last won a trophy in 1954-55 season but they, too won the Carabao Cup by beating Liverpool in final. PSG, one of the Football giants captured their maiden Champions League title by beating Inter Milan in the finals.
