On Saturday, June 14, South Africa stunned Australia as the Proteas won their first-ever WTC title by handing a six-wicket defeat to the Baggy Greens at Lord's.
It is a special win for South Africa as it was their second ICC title and ended a 27-year-long wait. It is worth noting that the Proteas have bottled several tournaments, and their last ICC trophy came in 1998 when Hansie Cronje led the Proteas to the ICC Champions Trophy.
On the other hand, Australia are a different beast in ICC events, as they are the most decorated team in the world. It is a rare sight to see Australia lose in an ICC final. Meanwhile, this article will look at all the finals lost by Australia in ICC events.
1. 1975 World Cup Final vs West Indies
Australia qualified for the finals of the first-ever cricket World Cup in 1975 but faced a 17-run defeat against the mighty West Indies. Notably, their first-ever defeat in an ICC final also came at the Lord's Ground.
In the first-ever final, West Indies, batting first, put 291 runs on the board, courtesy of a century from Clive Lloyd. In reply, Australia only managed to put 274 runs, resulting in a 17-run defeat.
2. 1996 World Cup Final vs Sri Lanka
Australia's second defeat in an ICC final came in 1996 when Sri Lanka stunned them by seven wickets to win their first World Cup. This time around, the Aussies batted first but only managed to put 241 runs on the board.
In reply, Aravinda de Silva's century put Australia off-track, and they suffered their second-ever defeat in the ICC final.
3. 2010 T20 World Cup Final vs England
In the 2010 T20 World Cup final, Australia and England locked horns in Barbados, where the Three Lions got better of their arch-nemesis to win their first-ever T20 World Cup trophy.
Australia could only post 147 runs on the board, while England chased down the target in 17 overs, with seven wickets in hand. Craig Kieswetter won the player of the match trophy for his brilliant fifty-plus score.
4. 2025 WTC Final vs South Africa
With the defeat against South Africa in the 2025 WTC final, the Pat Cummins-led side have now lost an ICC final in every format. Australia were ahead in the game halfway through as the Baggy Greens had a lead of 74 runs.
Meanwhile, South Africa were tasked to chase down the second-highest total in the history of Lord's and the Temba Bavuma-led side rose to the occasion and handed Australia a five-wicket defeat.
