In the latest development, the proposed grand launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy - the new name for the India-England Test series has been postponed. This decision comes in the wake of the Ahmedabad Air India plane crash which took place on June 12, Thursday.
As per Cricbuzz, the trophy revealing ceremony was set to take place on Saturday, June 14 on the sidelines of the World Test Championship (WTC) final. However, judging by what transpired in India, the BCCI and ECB decided to call-off the event which was set to take place in Lord's London.
"Given the tragic events in India, the announcement may wait a while out of respect (for the lives lost)," a very high ranked ECB official told Cricbuzz on Saturday. Both the BCCI and ECB officials are deciding on a flexible new date. "The BCCI are still deciding on the right time for the announcement. The announcement had been kept flexible due to the tragedy," the ECB official further said.
What happened in Ahmedabad which led to trophy launch cancellation?
On Thursday, an Air India aircraft, carrying 275 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad airport. Almost everyone were killed, barring one passenger as the plane crash was one of the worst disaster in aviation history.
After reaching a height of 650m, the plane started to lose height. The Pilot gave a Mayday call to ATC, but when the ATC revert back there was no response and exactly after one minute the aircraft crashed.
Pataudi legacy to continue despite new trophy name
The Anderson-Tendulkar name comes in place of the Pataudi Trophy, which was given to the winner of the India-England Test series. However, a few months back, the ECB decided to retire the name and the decision was communicated to the Pataudi family.
However, the ECB took a U-turn as following a request from the BCCI and in particular the new ICC chair, Jay Shah, a decision was taken to keep the Pataudi legacy in the bilateral series.
