South Africa have finally done it!. After years of being called the "Chokers", the Proteas side diminished the tag and thrashed the Australian team to capture the World Test Championship (WTC) title. Led by a supremely brilliant leader, Temba Bavuma, the team showed their class and chased down the target of 282 as Bavuma became the second South African captain to win an ICC title for his nation.

This was the second-highest successful run-chase at Lord's in Tests as the Proteas defeated the seemingly invincible Australia to capture their "second-ever" ICC trophy. Interestingly, this win has ended South Africa's long wait for an ICC trophy and not many people know that this is not their maiden ICC title.

After 27 years, the Rainbow Nation have finally defeated an opponent in the finale and the first time it happened was way back in 1998.

When was the first time the Proteas team won an ICC title?

For starters, this is South Africa's second-ever ICC senior men's title. Their first-ever championship win came 27-years-ago in 1998. Prior to the Champions Trophy, the teams used to participate in ICC Knockout Trophy and this was the event where the Proteas tasted success for the first time.

The team was led by Hansie Cronje and the side had some of the best players of that era. West Indies batted first and the side could only post 245 runs. In reply, the South African had to grind hard but Cronje remained unbeaten at 61 as the side cruised past the winning line to capture the title of a champion.

Temba's patience paid off for Proteas

Over the last two decades, the Rainbow nation have had some brilliant leaders, however, the side never tasted success and always felt short in crucial moments. But under the guidance of Bavuma, the South African team looked focused as they finished at the top of the WTC points table and outplayed the Aussies in the finale.

The captain, himself played a huge part in the win as in the second innings, Bavuma played a patient knock of 66 and alongside centurion Aiden Markram took the team to glory.
