Virat Kohli to lead RCB [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/X.Com]
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bought some interesting players in the auction and made some shrewd buys to strengthen their side ahead of the next IPL season. However, eyebrows were raised when they didn't go after any possible captaincy candidates to replace Faf du Plessis.
The team bought the likes of Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Tim David, and other prominent names, but none of them were captaincy candidates as fans were amused at the auction strategy by the franchise.
The franchise didn't look desperate for the captaincy options and were generally smart enough in their auction purchase. When the big names came up like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, the team did raise the paddle, but weren't interested in going hard for them as all the three player were sold for a high price.
There are a couple of reasons as to why the RCB management didn't bid for a captaincy candidates and one possible reason could be the comeback of Virat Kohli as the leader. Hence, we decode as to why RCB didn't go after a captaincy candidate.
Kohli all but sorted as the RCB captain
There were reports before the mega auction that RCB have had discussion with Kohli and the former skipper is willing to accept the captaincy duties once again. Virat Kohli led RCB from 2013-21 and also led them to the finals in 2016.
He abruptly left the captaincy during the 2021 season, and it seems both Kohli and RCB have unfinished business left. Kohli has been with RCB since the inception of the league and the franchise would love to win their maiden IPL title with their long-standing servant.
RCB wanted to pick smart buys in the auction
RCB have had a history of picking up superstar players for big amount and then not able to utilise them. This season, the trend changed as they hardly spent anything over 12 crore mark, and were satisfied in investing in the loopholes rather than buying superstars.
Also, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant went for a high price, and despite having the second largest purse in the auction, the team decided they won't go for big names this season.
