Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli sustained his rough patch in Tests, being dismissed for a low score in the ongoing match against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After Australia posted a respectable 337-run total in their first innings, India had a disastrous start with the bat, losing KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal in quick succession. 

Virat Kohli came out to bat following Jaiswal's departure and was expected to bail India out of trouble with an impactful knock. However, the veteran cricketer couldn't live up to the hype, with Scott Boland getting his prized scalp for eleven runs. 

As the Indian batter got out cheaply once again, Indian fans expressed their frustration, calling for his axing from the format.

  • Virat Kohli's recent performance in Test cricket has been nothing short of disappointing. In his last 14 innings, Kohli has managed only 315 runs at a poor average of 26.25. 
  • In fact, Kohli averages only 32.14 across 64 Test innings since the start of 2020. This stat suggests two things; he has failed for a considerable period and also got enough opportunities to get back his rhythm. 
  • Thus, he has been inconsistent with the bat for quite a while now, which is why he should be left out of the team if he doesn't turn things around in the remainder of the series. 

Virat Kohli's Familiar Dismissal In Tests Has Made Him Unreliable

  • The primary reason behind Virat Kohli's persistent rough patch in Tests is his tendency to poke at the deliveries pitched around the fourth stump line. Kohli has primarily been dependent on his drives to score runs, and the fast bowlers have turned his strength into his weakness. 
  • Quality pacers from formidable cricketing sides have exploited his vulnerability around the off stump, dismissing him time and again by hitting the corridor of uncertainty. His tendency to commit early onto his front foot has brought disastrous consequences for the batting maestro. 
  • This familiar mode of dismissal has made Kohli unreliable in the Indian batting lineup. So, considering the seamers have got him out without breaking a sweat and he seems short of confidence, the talisman might have to bid adieu to the format if he doesn't resolve the technical issue.

  • The ongoing World Test Championship cycle ends in June, with the much-anticipated final scheduled to take place at Lord's. 
  • The ongoing Australian tour will be India's final series before the WTC final. Regardless of their qualification for the ultimate clash, the Indian think tank must prepare a roadmap for the next cycle.
