The IPL 2025 caravan is rolling and all eyes will be on Match 16 as Mumbai Indians (MI) take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium on Friday, April 4. The five-time champs MI finally found their mojo against KKR in their last match, but they have still got a few cracks to plaster.
As for LSG, they've been blowing hot and cold. Two losses from three isn’t how they had hoped to kick off. With the Lucknow pitch known for being a little sticky and favouring bowlers under lights, team combinations will be the real deal-breaker.
Let’s break down what MI’s playing XI could look like and the big calls Hardik Pandya might have to make.
Rickelton-Rohit to Open But Will Rohit Get One More Go?
There is no hiding it. Rohit Sharma’s form has nosedived. Just 21 runs in three games. Average? A scary 7.00. Strike rate? 105. The former skipper has looked completely out of sorts. Sure, he is a match-winner but in a tournament like IPL, reputation only buys you so much time.

That said, it is unlikely he will be benched yet. But eyes will be on him, big time. On the other hand, Ryan Rickelton is flying high. After that classy unbeaten fifty against KKR, there’s no question as he will open alongside Rohit.
Middle Order Core with Tilak, SKY, Jacks, Hardik & Dhir
Tilak has been solid for MI and is expected to walk in at one-down. He didn’t bat in the previous game, thanks to a stroll in the park during the chase, but his role in the middle overs remains crucial, especially on a Lucknow track where stroke-making isn’t always easy.
Suryakumar Yadav is back in business and looks set to do SKY things. Will Jacks, however, is under the scanner. Just 27 runs in two innings at a sluggish SR of 112.50. He might be on thin ice.

Corbin Bosch could be an alternative as he can bat, bowl and swing momentum. That being said, MI might just give Jacks one more shot before pulling the trigger.

Hardik Pandya has quietly been building into the season with decent spells with the ball and though his bat hasn’t fired yet, the intent has been there. Naman Dhir remains MI’s X-factor lower down. He is explosive and MI will hope he fires if needed at the death.
And then there’s the new player on the block, Ashwani Kumar. Four wickets in his debut game, including a dream spell that decimated KKR. He will retain his spot as MI aim to secure their second win.
MI’s Probable XI vs LSG
Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Will Jacks, Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult & Ashwani Kumar
