Glenn Maxwell's memorable counterattack against Afghanistan during the ICC World Cup 2023 league-stage encounter in Mumbai on Tuesday (November 7) fetched him multiple spectacular records in the history of One-Day Internationals.

The Australian match-winner, who smashed a breathtaking 201 not out off 128 deliveries to help the five-time champions ultimately reach home to bag the stiff 292-run target, shattered humongous records on his way to producing an assault for the ages after walking in at a precarious 49/4.

Apart from the horrific Aussie collapse, which saw the scorecard soon read 91/7 and an incredible Afghanistan upset looking more than likely, Maxwell battled great physical strain and cramps amidst extensive Mumbai humidity to unveil a scintillating knock, one which is now being hailed as the greatest ODI innings seen.

Maxwell was initially fortunate to survive with DRS what seemed a plumb LBW call and also got dropped twice by Afghanistan before settling in at the crease. Once there, the extravagant right-hander belted the skillful but inexperienced Afghanistan attack for 21 fours and 10 sixes, including a match-sealing one over mid-wicket to record his double ton.

Maxwell Breaks Multiple Records In Wankhede Special

Maxwell shattered unique set of records with an innings for the ages against the Afghans. While managing to completely suppress an opposition firmly on top and turning the match around with his unbelievable knock, the experienced cricketer also etched himself in the record books for multiple great feats.

  • The first of them saw Maxwell become the first-ever Australian double centurion in men's One-Day Internationals. It was the 11th double hundred produced in 50-over history but a maiden instance of an Aussie batter clinching the memorable feat. The previous best Australian men's ODI score was 185* by former allrounder Shane Watson in 2011 against Bangladesh.
  • Maxwell's 201* was also the maiden double hundred recorded in a run-chase in One-Day cricket. Notably, all previous double centuries made in the format were recorded in the first-innings of the match. Maxwell surpassed Pakistan's aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman to the special feat of being the one with the highest score in a chase. Fakhar had made 193 against South Africa back in 2021.
  • The match-winner's double ton was also only the third instance of a batter reaching the mammoth landmark in men's World Cup history after Chris Gayle (215) against Zimbabwe and Martin Guptill (237) against the West Indies during the high-scoring 2015 edition of the marquee tournament.
  • One Indian record that Maxwell fell just shy of achieving on the night is still held by young wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, who remains the fastest double centurion in ODIs with a 126-ball memorable knock against Bangladesh late last year. Maxwell reached his double off 128 deliveries, becoming the second-fastest to the milestone.
