One of the major reasons behind Australia's resurgence in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India after a string of losses has been the terrific form of spinner Adam Zampa.

Zampa, who heading into the tournament looked out of form, managed to regain his peak performance and clinch four-fers at will, which helped him register a unique World Cup record.

With his solitary wicket against Afghanistan on Tuesday evening, Zampa claimed his 20th wicket this edition, equalling the late Shane Warne's record of 20 scalps in a single edition (1999) of the World Cup as a spinner.

Zampa claimed the crucial wicket of Azmatullah Omarzai, in Australia three-wicket win over Afghanistan at Wankhede.

Zampa is now fourth in the list of most wickets for a spinner in a single World Cup edition, which is led by Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, who picked 23 in the 2007 edition.

Behind Muralitharan, is Pakistan Shahid Afridi (21) in 2011, and Australia Brad Hogg (21) in 2007, followed by Warne and Zampa.

Most Wickets As Spinner In Single World Cup Edition

Player (Matches)
Wickets (Edition)
Muttiah Muralitharan (10)23 (2007)
Shahid Afridi (8)21 (2011)
Brad Hogg (11)21 (2007)
Shane Warne (10)20 (1999)
Adam Zampa (8)20 (2023*)

Interestingly, Zampa at least has two more matches to surpass this tally, which is a real possibility given the leg-spinner's form.
