India Without A Batting Coach: Here's Why Gautam Gambhir Didn't Feel The Need For One

India head coach Gautam Gambhir is under the scanner after India's underwhelming show in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Rohit Sharma-led side started the tour on a high with a win in the first match. However, post-Perth victory, things have only gone south. 

The visitors put on a horror show with the bat in the Adelaide Test and it led to an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat. Further, in the ongoing 3rd Test, Australia, batting first, put 455 runs at the Gabba, while India have already lost four wickets for less than 50 runs on the board. 

Gambhir Show Faith In Abhishek Nayar

Gambhir and the Indian batters are under the scanner for a flop show and now questions are being raised over the lack of a batting coach in the team. Notably, former batting coach Vikram Rathour's contract ended with Rahul Dravid's departure. 

Meanwhile, Gambhir roped in Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten doeschate as his two assistant coaches but refrained from hiring a specialised batting coach. While, the world is busy criticising Gambhir for not demanding a batting coach, the former India opener might have his own reasons and it is related to the IPL.

IPL's Success Behind Gambhir's Decision

It is worth noting that Gambhir bagged a head coach contract following a great job in the IPL. He guided KKR to their third IPL glory in 2024 as a mentor. In KKR's title-winning season, they too didn't have a specific batting coach and Abhishek Nayar acted as assistant coach.

Also, Gambhir entered the mentorship role in IPL with Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and brought immediate success as LSG qualified for the playoffs in their first two seasons. Even there, LSG didn't had a specific batting coach and relied on Gambhir to don the dual role of a mentor and a batting coach.

Thus, Gambhir saw results in his last three season as a mentor in IPL without a batting coach and would looked to replicate a similar structure for the Indian team, but it has backfired so far.
