The India Vs Bangladesh 1st Test in Chennai was expected to be a tough contest between two tough teams, but on the morning of the first day, Bangladesh showed why they cannot be taken lightly in the two-match series. The conditions suited fast-bowling and Bangladesh rightly elected to bowl first after winning the toss.

For some reason, the Chepauk surface played against its true nature and became a paradise for the pacers and Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud took full advantage of it.

Hasan Mahmud: The rising star of Bangladesh cricket

The 24-year-old has impressed everyone with his pace, since his making his Bangladesh debut in 2020. For the first couple of years, he only featured in white-ball cricket for the Tigers, and finally broke through the Test barrier in 2024.

He immediately stamped his authority in Test cricket, picking up a 5-wicket haul in the second Test match against Pakistan, thus sealing a historic 2-0 win against the Asian giants. Before the Chennai Test, he had 14-wickets in 3 matches, and now the figure has risen to 18.

In ODI cricket. he has scalped 30 wickets in 22 matches, and in the shortest format of the game - T20Is, Mahmud has bagged 18 wickets in 18 matches, showcasing his skills across formats.

Mahmud runs-riot with wickets of Rohit, Kohli, Gill and Pant

Hasan Mahmud scalped 4 Indian wickets and was the chief destroyer as the famed Indian batting lineup was pushed on the back-foot by a relatively unknown commodity.

He started the carnage by dismissing Rohit Sharma in the 5th over, as the Indian skipper edged on to the second slip fielder. The tearaway pacer then came back to knock over Shubman Gill for a duck as the Prince of Indian cricket looked clueless.

However, Mahmud's biggest scalp came in the form of Virat Kohli. The right-arm seamer brilliant exposed Kohli's weakness and forced him to play away from his body, thus inducing an outside-edge. With Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal doing the repair work, Mahmud came back to haunt India once again, this time dismissing Pant for 39.
