After the 2025 World Cup triumph for India, the focus now shifts to the fourth edition of Women's Premier League, which begins in February 2026. Meanwhile, November 7 is the last date for all five franchises to submit their final retention list as the first-ever mega-auction is set to take place later this month.

This article will focus on Gujarat Giants, who are yet to prove their mettle in the tournament. The Giants finished last in the first two seasons and earned their first-ever playoff berth in WPL 2025. Notably, Gujarat Giants finished third and lost to MI in the eliminators.

The Giants would look to turn things around in WPL 2026 and cross the finish line. To do so, they need to work on their squad, and the focus of this article, too, would be to analyse the retentions for the Ashleigh Gardner-led side for the 2026 edition.

Gujarat Giants' retention strategy

Every team is allowed to retain a maximum of five players, but the Giants are most likely to go ahead with just four retentions. Notably, one issue with Gujarat's squad is that they have plenty of overseas stars and lack homegrown Indian talent.

Now, according to WPL rules, a team is only allowed to retain a maximum of two overseas cricketers, which is why the Giants are most likely to go ahead with 2 overseas retentions and two India-capped stars. Here is the list of four retentions that Gujarat can make for WPL 2026.

1. Ashleigh Gardner

Why Gardner?

Ashleigh Gardner needs no introduction as the star Australian batter recently topped ODI all-rounder charts, ranks 2nd on the batters lists and third on the bowling ranking.

Further, Gardner is also leading the Gujarat Giants and took the team to their first-ever playoffs in her first season in command. Setting everything aside, then Gardner had a great WPL and she scored 243 runs in nine innings, averaging 30.38.

Let's look at her detailed stats for WPL 2025

Gardner had a great WPL, where she slammed three fifty-plus scores and also maintained the strike-rate of 165.

2. Laura Wolvaardt

Why Laura over Litchfield?

Gujarat Giants have a tough choice to make for WPL 2026 as they have a tough choice to make between Laura Wolvaardt and Phoebe Litchfield. It feels like the Women in Orange are set to prefer Laura over Phoebe because of her recent heroics in Women's World Cup 2025.

Laura, who led SA to the final, scored two centuries in the knock-out stages and with her retention, GG will have a great opening option.

Talking about Laura's performance in WPL 2025, then she played just three matches, but her rising star is the reason why she will be retained ahead of Litchfield.

Laura had a pathetic WPL 2025, but would look to turn things around in the next edition and will definitely get more chances than three matches she played last season

3. Harleen Deol

Why Harleen Deol?

Gujarat Giants lack Indian star-power, but Harleen Deol brings that to the table. The India star batter has raised the bar after helping India win their maiden World Cup title. Talking about WPL, Deol has been with GG since the inception and is the leading run-getter for Gujarat  by an Indian with 482 runs in 20 matches.

Talking about WPL 2025, she had a great season as the right-handed batter scored 232 runs in nine innings. Let's look at her detailed stats.

Deol was the consistent with the bat and averaged 38.67. Further, she also kept her strike-rate in check and batted with a rate of 120.83, which also featured a solitary fifty.

4. Kashvee Gautam

Why Kashvee Gautam?

Among the bowlers, Kashvee Gautam is most likely to be retained as the right-arm medium seamer was Gujarat Giants' best bowler in WPL 2025. Notably, the 22-year-old shone in her debut season and took 11 wickets in nine innings.

Further, age is on her side as the youngster is just 22 years old and can turn out to be a great future prospect for the Women in Orange. Let's look at her detailed stats for WPL 2025.
