India have faced a tumultuous period in their recent Test series against New Zealand, with the threat of a whitewash looming over them. After a shocking defeat in the first two Tests, the Men In Blue is now under immense pressure as they head into the last and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Team India, in the recent Test matches, have been below par, where in the Pune Test, India suffered a rare series defeat against New Zealand, following a 113-run loss. This defeat came on the back of an embarrassing first Test in Bengaluru, where India were bowled out for 46 runs in their first innings and lost the match by 8 wickets.

With the series currently standing at 2-0 in favour of the Black Caps, India find itself in a precarious position. If they lose the final Test starting Friday, November 1, it would be their first whitewash at home in a Test series since 1999-2000, which would be a deeply embarrassing outcome for a team known for its strength in home conditions.

The 1999-2000 Series Against South Africa

The last time India experienced a clean sweep at home in a multi-match Test series was during February-March 2000 against South Africa. In that series, India lost both matches. Led by Sachin Tendulkar, the first Test was held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where South Africa won by four wickets. India had opted to bat first and managed to post only 225 on the board.

In their first innings, India managed to limit South Africa to 176 runs thanks to a solid effort from their bowlers, which gave them a 49-run lead. However, things went downhill for the Men in Blue in their second innings, where they collapsed and were all out for just 113 runs. This meant South Africa needed only 164 runs to win the match.

Openers Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs got the innings off to a good start with a partnership of 51 runs for the first wicket. Although the Proteas lost a few wickets along the way, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher kept their composure and ensured they reached the target without any major issues. Despite India’s loss, Sachin Tendulkar stood out by scoring a brilliant 97 runs and was named Player of the Match for his performance.

However, India struggled in the second Test in Bengaluru, where they were defeated by an innings and 71 runs. South Africa dominaned the match as they piled 479 runs in their first innings, aided by solid performances from several players, including Jacques Kallis and Daryl Cullinan. India could only manage scores of 158 and 102 in their innings, with Mohammad Azharuddin’s century in the second innings failing to change the outcome.
