The Mumbai Indians, five-time IPL champions, have finalised their 23-member squad in the recent mega auction. The squad consists of eight overseas players and 15 domestic players. MI also retained five players ahead of the auction including Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya among others.

During the auction, they spent 44.8 crore from their budget, securing a combination of strong and disappointing bids. However, let's admit that MI managed to dominate the auction, securing some great deals with Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner for 5.25 crore and 2 crore, respectively.

MI Full Squad 2025

Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Will Jacks, AM Ghazanfar, Mitchell Santner, Ryan Rickelton, Reece Topley, Lizaad Williams, Robin Minz, Karn Sharma, Vignesh Puthur, Bevon Jacobs, Satyanarayana Raju, Raj Bawa, Ashwani Kumar, Arjun Tendulkar, Krishnan Shrijith

With that being said, listed below are some of the worst buying decisions made by Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 mega auction.

MI 3 Worst Buys in IPL Auction

3. Bevon Jacobs

  • The young Kiwi talent was acquired by MI for only 30 lakhs. The uncapped batter, so far has only played 9 T20 matches amassing a total of 134 runs at an average of 33.50.
  • Jacobs' value may be questioned regarding his playing position. He may spend most of the season on the bench because of talented veterans like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Verma, who will be strong contenders for the top-order batting positions.

2. Lizaad Williams

  • MI acquired Lizaad Williams for 75 lakhs, but this investment could turn out to be unwise for the team. While the Proteas bowler boasts a respectable T20 record, having taken 111 wickets in 89 matches, the Indian pitches often favour bowlers with subtle variations, which may reduce the effectiveness of Williams’ pace-oriented style, particularly on slower tracks.
  • MI has secured a strong set of overseas fast bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Reece Topley. With a limit on overseas players in the playing XI, Williams may find it difficult to book a spot.

1. Deepak Chahar

  • Deepak Chahar is a skilled powerplay bowler, but his acquisition for INR 9.25 crore represents a significant portion of Mumbai Indians' budget. Given their already star-studded lineup, which includes top players like Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Hardik Pandya, Chahar's addition appears somewhat unnecessary.
  • Furthermore, there are concerns regarding Chahar's injury history. He has experienced several injuries in recent seasons, which have affected his consistency and availability. Given Mumbai Indians' heavy reliance on fit and reliable performers, investing in Chahar could be risky, as injuries might disrupt their bowling plans.
