England Test captain Ben Stokes could face a potential absence from the upcoming series against Sri Lanka after sustaining a hamstring injury during a domestic T20 match.

The all-rounder was forced to leave the field while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred 2024 competition. While the extent of the injury is yet to be determined, Stokes was later seen on crutches, which raised concerns about his availability for the Test series for Sri Lanka.

If Ben Stokes is ruled out, vice-captain Ollie Pope is expected to assume captaincy duties. The injury comes at a critical juncture for England, who will aim to build upon their recent 3-0 series victory over the West Indies and accumulate crucial points for the ICC World Test Championship.

Here, in this article, let's take a look at who could replace Ben Stokes in the upcoming Sri Lanka series.

3 Potential Replacements For Ben Stokes Vs Sri Lanka

Lyndon James

Lyndon James could likely emerge as a compelling candidate to potentially fill the substantial void left by Ben Stokes in the England Test team.

His performance in the County Championship Division One this season is noteworthy, particularly with his contributions both with the bat and the ball. James' ability to bat in the middle order and his right-arm pace make him a versatile player, similar to Stokes.

Paul Walter

Paul Walter's recent performances for Essex in the County Championship Division One have been exceptional. Despite playing only the latter half of the season, the 30-year-old has amassed 366 runs at an average of 61 and a strike rate of 68.28, which included a century and three half-centuries.

His left-handed batting could provide a valuable counterbalance to England's predominantly right-handed middle order, particularly in the absence of Ben Stokes.

Sam Curran

Sam Curran's ability to contribute with both bat and ball in high-pressure situations aligns well with the aggressive, positive approach of 'Bazball' and could likely be the first option for the replacement of Ben Stokes.

While Curran hasn't played much red-ball cricket lately, his adaptability and current form in white-ball formats suggest that he could bring a fresh, attacking mindset to the Test side.

His ability to swing the ball, coupled with his aggressive batting style, could make him a valuable asset, especially if England is looking to replace a player like Ben Stokes.
