On Friday, India will cross swords against Australia in the second Test of the ongoing five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Adelaide Oval. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team currently leads the series by 1-0, thanks to its clinical performance in the opening encounter at Perth Stadium.

Regarding skipper Rohit Sharma, the talismanic batter missed the first Test of the series due to the birth of his second child. In his absence, ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah led the team from the front, as India outclassed Australia across departments to go one-nil up.

However, as Rohit prepares for the much-awaited pink ball Test in Adelaide, here are three reasons which might prevent him from succeeding with the bat in his comeback game.

3 Reasons Why Rohit Sharma Might Fail In IND vs AUS 2nd Test

Rohit Sharma's recent abysmal form in Tests

  • Indian captain Rohit Sharma has recently struggled to get going in Test cricket. In his last ten Test innings, the stylish right-handed batter has managed only 133 runs at a horrendous average of 13.3.
  • Furthermore, Rohit had a forgettable outing in the recently held warm-up game against the Australia Prime Minister's XI, scoring only three runs. These stats indicate his abysmal recent form in Test cricket, which is why he might not live up to the expectations in the second Test vs Australia.

Rohit Sharma's new batting position might challenge him

  • Rohit Sharma has confirmed that he will bat in the middle order, with India persisting with the reliable duo of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top order.
  • Although Rohit started his Test career as a middle order batter, he has been opening the batting for India regularly since 2019. So, his demotion certainly poses a new challenge for the Indian skipper, who is at the twilight of his career.
  • Therefore, with due respect to his ability and adaptability, Rohit might not succeed with the bat in Adelaide if he doesn't adhere to the demands of a lower middle order batter in this game.

Rohit Sharma's issues vs moving Ball and knack for throwing away his start

  • Rohit Sharma had a brilliant tour of England in 2020, as he showcased exemplary technique to neutralise the likes of James Anderson and Ollie Robinson under testing conditions.
  • However, the fast bowlers have been able to exploit his technical weakness around the off-stump in recent times. The Indian captain even found it tough to get going when the ball seamed off the deck in the Bangladesh home Tests. So, given that the Australian pacers, particularly Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, will hit the corridor of uncertainty more often than not, the probability of Rohit's cheap dismissal seems more than that of his success.
  • Furthermore, Rohit Sharma has recently developed a tendency to play an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket in the purest format. It's absolutely fine if his attacking game works wonders for India. But having said that, this mentality is a double-edged sword, as it can also hamper his effectiveness on Adelaide's seaming track against Australia's disciplined bowling attack.
