'You've Got to Think if Warner's Time is Up?': Michael Clarke Proposes Alternatives For Struggling Opener

Australian opener David Warner's lacklustre performances in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series against England have drawn scrutiny and raised concerns.

Clarke suggests considering other options to replace Warner

During the Ashes 2023 so far, Warner has struggled to improve his recent and overall Test record in England. With only one fifty to his name, the cricketer from Paddington has averaged a paltry 23.50.

The southpaw’s struggles have been compounded by Stuart Broad, who dismissed Warner in both innings of the third Test at Headingley, marking the 17th time the Englishman has claimed his wicket.

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke, in an interview with Sky Sports Radio, suggested that Australia should consider replacing Warner in the playing eleven. Clarke proposed several names as potential replacements for the left-handed opener.

According to Clarke, the current situation calls for a reevaluation of the players' roles in the team. Warner has been given numerous chances but continues to struggle against Broad.

“Tell me what they do now … The No.1 issue is you’ve stuck with Warner, given him every opportunity, and (Stuart) Broad’s still got his number. Is it time?. If it’s time, I wouldn’t even be thinking about who opens the batting because you’ve got options,” said Clarke.

In Clarke's opinion, Mitchell Marsh is currently performing well and has the potential to open the batting if required and Travis Head could also be a suitable candidate for the opening position.

The former Aussie captain also suggested that Marnus Labuschagne hasn't been scoring as many runs as expected at No.3 and could be considered for the opening role. This would allow Steve Smith to move to No.3, with Head taking the No.4 spot. Additionally, Clarke proposed Marsh and Cameron Green for the No.5 and No.6 positions respectively.

Clarke further emphasized the need to consider whether Warner's time in the team has come to an end. Moreover, he raised concerns about Cameron Green's fitness and whether he is fully capable of bowling the necessary overs. The Aussie veteran recommended that the team should either stick with Warner or make adjustments to the batting order and include Marsh.
