BCB has appointed Litton Das as their new T20I captain, and his maiden stint as a leader will be the two T20Is against UAE. Since his appointment, there has been criticism of the move as Litton Das has not been in great form in international cricket lately.
Bangladesh Coach Rubbishes Doubts Over Litton Das' Captaincy
The talented wicketkeeper batter though is considered as extremely talented and has played some memorable knocks for Bangladesh in the past. Under his leadership, Bangladesh also whitewashed West Indies in December 2024. Thus, selectors have decided to put faith in him and in a recent interaction with reporters, Bangladesh's senior assistant coach, Mohammad Salahuddin opened up about their decision.
Salahuddin made it clear that some people might not like it, but captaining Bangladesh is not an easy job and they need to give new captain some time to adjust to his role. He also applauded Litton Das's tactical accumen and mentioned that Bangladesh is quite emotional as a nation and they don't often play as a team.
Thus, he emphasised that the management want to give Litton Das a longer rope and help him execute his plans better.
"You might dislike it or you are hot headed seeing certain people in captaincy role but captaining Bangladesh team from outside might look easy but that is not the case because it is a very difficult job and for that we all have to lend our support."
"Litton's got the credentials to lead the side, like inspiring the team to make strategic decision and he is good at it. You cannot create a leader right away and it's an instinctive thing... Those who think that captaining Bangladesh team is easy you are living in fool's paradise. One big issue is that we don't perform together as a team... And as a nation, we're very emotional... Now, if you don't let a captain plan the way he wants, then why make him captain in the first place?"
He also dismissed media's biased perception of Litton Das . The coach explained that the perception is because he doesn't talk much with media and also stated that improvement as a player and a human being is a constant process.
"We always see Litton a bit differently - maybe because he doesn't talk much with you (media)...Everyone has areas to improve - not just as a captain, but also as a batter and even as a human being. I'm trying to teach one thing - when I sit in this chair, I might bring name and fame with me. But I also have to carry the criticism that comes with it."
Thus, Bangladesh management clearly has plans of keeping Litton as captain atleast till the 2026 T20 World Cup and he would like to make a positive impression in the two T20Is against UAE, starting from May 17.
