Suryakumar Yadav finally got into the groove during the 1st ODI game of the 3-match series between India and Australia on Friday. The immense faith instilled by Rahul Dravid and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma turned out to be fruitful as Suryakumar Yadav went on to score his first half-century in about 590 days.

Although the dynamic batter is beginning to find his feet leading upto the World Cup, many experts believe that one solitary knock against Australia does not guarantee him a spot in the first playing 11 for team India in the ODI World Cup.

Speaking to Start Sports, the former Indian top-order batter Gautam Gambhir shared his insights on Suryakumar’s inclusion in the World Cup playing Xl squad. Gambhir opined that Surya should ideally play the finishers role at no.7 for India. But while doing so, the team management will need to reconsider the rest of the team composition.

“When you go for a World Cup, you generally have a fixed playing XI. You don't chop or change. If Suryakumar Yadav is in your first playing XI then I would want him to bat at 6-7, but the big question will then be who will bat at No. 5.

Then Jadeja can bat at No. 5, Hardik at 6 and Suryakumar as finisher where he can bat in the final 15-20 overs. But it will be a huge gamble deciding whether you want Jadeja at No. 5 and Suryakumar, in the form that he is in ODI cricket, at No. 7.”

Suryakumar’s rising form in limited overs cricket raises more questions than answers. With the type of caliber he possess, Surya has the capability to convert his form translate his success in T20 cricket into the 50-overs format. With only two games remaining before the World Cup, Surya has the opportunity to bring his incredible batting abilities to the fore.
