India’s generational fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah hurt his back during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 series against Australia. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Bumrah admitted that he compromised his workload to save India’s chances of qualifying for the WTC 2025 final.
During India’s tour of Australia last year, the men in blue were under tremendous pressure as they lost the home Test series against New Zealand, thus jeopardising their odds of qualifying for the World Test Championship 2025 final.
Moreover, a dispirited India lost the BGT series as well due to collective shambolic performance, and to add to the misery, Jasprit Bumrah injured himself.
Jasprit Bumrah Opens Up On Pressure During BGT Series
With a 2-1 lead, Australia challenged India in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar 2024-25 series at Sydney Cricket Ground. However, in the last inning, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was also captaining the team, walked off the field with a lower back injury. That injury kept him out for months before he returned during the IPL 2025 edition.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Sky Sports, Bumrah spoke to Dinesh Karthik and revealed that he compromised his workload during the BGT series to give India the best chance at qualifying for the WTC 2025 final.
"In Australia there were certain scenarios that you know we had to push extra because the series was on the line, I was doing really well and you know you wanted to be in a scenario where you wanted to give the team the best chance because if we would have won that series WTC final was possible," Bumrah told Sky Sports.
However, Bumrah failed in his mission, as he not only got injured but also India lost the SCG Test to go down 1-3 in the series and bowed out of the WTC final race.
Bumrah Turned Down Test Captaincy Role
In the same interview with Sky Sports, Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he turned down the offer to become India’s next Test captain due to workload concerns. The pacer explained that he informed the BCCI that his body is incapable of holding the workload of 5 Test matches.
Moreover, he feels it's unfair on the team to have him as leader only for certain games. Hence, to maintain uniformity and clarity, Bumrah dropped out of the captaincy race, and Shubman Gill was then announced as India’s next Test captain. His first assignment will be to lead in a five-game Test series against England beginning on June 20 in Leeds.
