In a significant development, reports indicate that India’s rising fast bowler Harshit Rana has been added to the Indian Test team as a backup option. According to a report from Cricbuzz, Rana—who was part of the India A squad—has been asked to remain in England and has been included in the main squad as an unofficial cover.

The report highlights that several players are dealing with minor injuries, and to prepare for any injury contingencies during the series, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star has been added to the squad. The identities of the players struggling with fitness have not been disclosed.

“Please don’t count him as an official member of the squad as yet,” an official told Cricbuzz.

A Roller Coaster Ride for Rana Recently

Harshit Rana rose to prominence during IPL 2024, emerging as KKR’s standout seam-bowling option and helping the franchise win the title for the first time in a decade. His success earned him a national call-up, and he has since represented India in all three formats.

Speaking of his Test career, the 23-year-old made his debut during the 2024 Border-Gavaskar series, playing two Test matches and taking four wickets.

For the ongoing England series, selectors initially overlooked Rana and did not include him in the main squad. However, he was part of the India A squad, which played two matches against the England Lions and an intra-squad game against the senior team.

India Overpowered With Fast Bowling Options

The reason Harshit Rana has not been officially announced as part of the main squad is the abundance of fast-bowling talent already available. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Shardul Thakur are all part of the squad and provide India with a strong pace attack.
