A consistent performer in domestic cricket, Abhimanyu Easwaran made headlines after being included in the India squad for their upcoming challenge against England. The Indian side will be touring England for a five-match Test series starting June 20th.
Abhimanyu's Father Blames IPL For Son's Delayed Debut
Scoring runs consistently in domestic cricket, Abhimanyu Easwaran is yet to bag an IPL contract. Therefore, that is the reason his father, Ranganathan Easwaran, feels has delayed his debut for the Indian side in white jersey.
Speaking exclusively to the Times of India, Abhimanyu's father expressed discontent over his son not being handed his debut cap yet, considering he has done exceedingly well in red-ball cricket, especially in the Ranji Trophy and for India A side across different regions.
According to his father, despite having this repertoire, he has not been considered yet, and the fact is that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the major concern, considering he would have been in the limelight had he been playing in the cash-rich league.
Abhimanyu's father was critical of the fact that other players were given chances over him, as they were regulars in the IPL, and Abhimanyu was ignored despite being picked in the squads primarily on the basis of the fact that he does not feature in any T20 side.
"Abhimanyu would've made his Team India debut long back had he got a chance to showcase his prowess in IPL. The tournament makes a big difference due to greater visibility. Abhimanyu is not a flamboyant player and doesn't run around the ground after scoring centuries. These things go against him. Abhimanyu has been a solid performer which is evident from his tally of 7,674 runs in 101 first-class matches at an average of 48.87. His experience across conditions in New Zealand, Australia, England and West Indies further sets him apart from other contenders," said Ranganathan.
Abhimanyu Gears Up For India's Tour Of England
His father backed Abhimanyu's batting ability and confidently expressed that he has solid experience playing in different conditions, as he has been an outstanding performer, especially in red-ball cricket.
Moreover, speaking about his preparation, Ranganathan mentioned that Abhimanyu practices with the dukes ball, which is something they have been focusing on, considering the fact that the Indian team will be playing five Test matches in England, where Abhimanyu could come in handy as he has left no stone unturned to ensure his inclusion in the side.
"Abhimanyu wakes up at 5.30 AM and spends hours facing pacers. We've organised two dozen duke balls to ensure no gap in preparation. He's batting on a green wicket with red soil because the bounce enables him to prepare extensively for English conditions,"
Additionally, his father then revealed that Abhimanyu has decided to break the door, as he does not want anyone to shatter his dream, consdering he has been focusing to ensure he gets his place in the side with some more dominant performances in red-ball cricket.
"Abhimanyu says, 'Not selecting me results in an even important thrust. Instead of banging the door, I have to break it. How can anyone shatter my dream just like that?'"
The Bengal batter has been on the radar of selectors for quite some time but has been ignored from the playing 11 on a consistent basis without getting a proper opportunity so far.
India recently announced the squad for England series, and Abhimanyu is another name that has made the headlines; therefore, they will be prepping hard for the five-match Test series in the UK beginning on the 20th of June in Headingley, Leeds.
