Ben Stokes’ Ashes 2025 tour to Australia went from difficult to brutal on Day 2 of the third Test at Adelaide. The England captain fought severe cramps while trying to keep his team alive in punishing conditions.

Coming in with England already under pressure at 71/4, Stokes dug in for a gritty 45 off 151 balls, spending more than four hours at the crease.

It was a far cry from his usual all-action style. Ben Stokes was limping for singles, taking long pauses between deliveries, and frequently stretching to keep his muscles from locking up.

With temperatures soaring past 40°C, Stokes’ innings became less about runs and more about sheer survival.

As the day wore on, the signs were impossible to ignore. Ben Stokes repeatedly bent over his bat, hands on knees, grimacing in pain. At times, he barely moved between balls.

After stumps, England batting coach Marcus Trescothick revealed just how bad things were. Talking to TNT, he said Stokes was sick and felt worn out. But the medical team will work on him overnight to ensure he is fit to bat on Day 3.

"He's worn out, cramping and trying to get the fluids in. He was really struggling to get the carbohydrates, he just said he was going to be sick every time. He's pretty broken in there, but the medical team will work on him overnight and get him back in the frame of mind for tomorrow," Trescothick said.

Meanwhile, England need their skipper Ben Stokes now more than ever. At stumps, they finished at 213/8 with a 45-run partnership brewing between Stokes and Jofra Archer.

Australia overpower England amid Snicko controversy

On Day 2, Australia tightened their grip on the third Ashes Test. After being bowled out for 371, the hosts struck early with the ball as Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon ripped through England’s top order.

Lyon claimed two wickets in his first over, while Cummins removed Joe Root again. Ben Stokes battled severe cramps in extreme heat to make a gritty 45, but England slumped to 213/8, still 158 runs behind.

The controversy and drama between DRS and Snicko did not go away. Jamie Smith was given out for edging to Alex Carey as Snicko showed movement when the ball passed the bat. But in real time, there was a clear gap, leading to frustration for England.
