The 3rd Ashes Test between Australia and England at Adelaide saw some serious cricketing action, with Australia packing some good punches with the bat to score 300-plus on the opening day.
The match saw Steve Smith ruled out at the last moment and replaced by Usman Khawaja, who made a solid contribution for the team with his resilient knock alongside Alex Carey. So, let’s take a look at how things panned out on Day 1 of the 3rd Ashes Test.
Australia choke early, but Khawaja steers the ship
Australia had early stumbles, with the Tasmanian brute Jake Weatherald gone in the 9th over for only 18 runs. Travis Head too couldn’t convert into a big score as he was sent back by Brydon Carse in the 10th over for just 10 runs.
Usman Khawaja, however, who had a dramatic turnaround to feature in the Test after being initially ruled out, steered the ship for Australia. Khawaja partnered with Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey to stitch 82 runs for himself.
Meanwhile, IPL mini-auction’s most expensive buy Cameron Green, went out for a duck, following the departure of Labuschagne.
Alex Carey bags a hundred to boost Australia
Alex Carey, who came in at number 6, was the top scorer at the end of Day 1 with his 106 runs off 143 balls. He stitched a partnership with Usman Khawaja for 91 runs and Josh Inglis for 59 runs to build Australia’s innings.
Carey was gritty throughout the knock with his 8 boundaries and one six before Will Jacks trapped him while he attempted a slog sweep.
Pat Cummins, who returned after missing out on the first two Tests, didn’t impress with the bat as he scored only 13 runs. At the end of Day 1, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were at the crease with Australia standing at a solid 326/8, heading into Day 2.
Jofra Archer leads England pack with 3-fer
From England’s camp, Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers with his three-wicket haul and five maidens in his spell. Brydon Carse and Will Jacks chipped in with two wickets each, while Josh Tongue picked up one from his 15 overs.
