Babar Azam fails twice upon BBL return [Source: @Iamzahiddd_56/X.com]
The Big Bash League debut hasn’t gone to script for Babar Azam after consecutive failures. But according to Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper Josh Philippe, the best is yet to come.
Arriving in Australia as one of the biggest overseas signings in BBL history, Babar carried enormous expectations.
A modern great in white-ball cricket, the former Pakistan captain boasts more T20I half-centuries than any other player and is the highest run-scorer in Pakistan Super League history.
Sydney Sixers back Babar Azam amid backlash
Yet, two games into BBL 15, the superstar opener is still searching for his first meaningful contribution.
Babar Azam managed just two runs on debut before falling for nine at the SCG, leading to heavy backlash. The Sixers themselves have stumbled to a rare 0-2 start.
But inside the Sydney Sixers camp, there is no panic. Josh Philippe, one of the most experienced players in the squad, came out strongly in support of his new opening partner.
Speaking to the media, Josh Philippe brushed aside concerns around Babar’s form, pointing instead to the challenge of adapting to Australian conditions.
He added that with more game time and experience, Babar Azam will eventually improve.
"He's a world-class player. It's probably challenging coming to Australia and these bouncy surfaces. But a couple of games under the belt, a few more sessions, he'll be absolutely fine. His record is outstanding. I have no doubt he'll be in the runs next game," Philippe said.
The team has also reshuffled its batting order to help Babar Azam thrive. Philippe, traditionally an opener, has shifted to no. 3 so he can tackle spin in the middle overs, allowing Babar to settle at the top.
Babar Azam likely to play full BBL season
Interestingly, Pakistan will tour Sri Lanka in early January 2026 for a 3-T20I series. However, BBL has confirmed that all Pakistan-contracted players will be available for the entire season.
With the T20 World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Pakistan need practice in Sri Lankan conditions, as all their games are scheduled in that region. But it seems the players are more focused on adhering to their BBL contracts.
