In the ongoing Ashes series, the sun was not the only heat England's players had to endure. On a scorching second day of the 3rd Test at the Adelaide Oval, Jofra Archer finally ended England’s misery by having the dangerous-looking Mitchell Starc out.
However, before having the lefty clean bowled, Archer and England captain Ben Stokes had a word or two in what appeared to be a heated interaction.
"Mate, don’t complain": England captain fires Archer in on-field discussion
Australia resumed their innings with Mitchell Starc completing his half-century with four boundaries. As the hosts looked to build momentum, the two senior England players, Stokes and Archer, came together mid-over, speaking animatedly as they made a judgment of the condition and conspired their next move.
The conversation took place at a very vital moment in the day, with the English Pacer preparing for his spell and Stokes closely implicated in field placements and bowling plans. The two players looked intense, gesturing and exchanging quick words, that reflected the haste and assertiveness of the situation as England searched for a much-needed breakthrough, making the conversation look fiery from a distance.
“Mate, don’t complain about the field placings when you bowl s***,” Stokes appeared to tell his teammate, as per Fox Sports.
Committing to the plan, Archer then “bowled on the stumps and look what happens”. Before that, Stokes also appeared to tell his leading quick to “shut the f*** up” when he blasted back.
The duo stitched a day-saving partnership together
Talking about the day's play, after the exchange earlier in the day, the senior English duo of Stokes and Archer stitched together a crucial 45-run stand for the ninth wicket to help England avoid the follow-on. Notably, the visitors were reeling at 168/8 in the final session, trailing by 203 runs.
However, Stokes (45*) and Archer (30*) came together at the crease and ensured England went into stumps without any further loss of wickets. They finished Day 2 of the third Ashes Test on 213/8, still trailing Australia by 158 runs.
