England’s Joe Root is inching closer to legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in Test cricket. The 33-year-old batter, who has been in exceptional form, is currently ranked seventh on the all-time run-scorer list, with 12,377 runs from 145 matches and 3,544 runs away from India’s master blaster.

Root, in an interview with England Cricket, talked about remaining focused on contributing to his team rather than chasing records.

He also added how there's no better feeling than winning a Test match and how being able to contribute to the team is a great feeling.

“I just want to play, and try, and do my bit for the team and score the runs as many as I can and see where we get to. But there’s no better feeling I mean, it’s obviously amazing when, you score 100, you’d be lying if you said it wasn’t, a big part of why you start playing the game and what you love about it.”

“But there’s no better feeling than winning a Test match. So the more, it can affect games and the more you can, add to the team, the greater it is. So, that will be the main focus. And hopefully more days like this will come with that mentality,” he added.

Joe Root Surpasses Alastair Cook

The second Test against Sri Lanka saw Root slam his 34th Test century, scoring 102 off 121 balls on Day 3 during the second innings. With this achievement, he also surpassed England’s great Alastair Cook, who slammed 33 centuries. Joe Root is now 95 runs away from becoming England’s all-time highest run scorer in Tests.

In the ongoing series, Joe Root’s twin centuries helped England set a daunting target of 483 runs for Sri Lanka. At the time of writing, SL needs 417 runs to win.
