As Team India prepares to face Afghanistan in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval, Barbados, former West Indies captain Brian Lara has shared his thoughts on the strategies Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should adopt.

Ahead of the critical clash, Lara suggested that one of the two aggressive Indian openers might need to adopt a more cautious approach on the Caribbean pitches.

India, having topped Group A in the US leg of the tournament, is now gearing up for the crucial Super 8 fixtures. Lara, speaking to Star Sports, emphasized the importance of adaptability in the batting partnership between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Here's what he said:

“I think there is all sorts of possibilities. They are two very aggressive players. They're two world-class players. But sometimes, in terms of putting together a partnership in the Caribbean, you think well, you know 60-70 runs in the powerplay would be a great start. I think one could afford to drop anchor, but it all depends, you know, on match-ups.

If you feel that, as a batter, that you are better equipped than the other player to do well against a bowler, then you do that. So I think it's a conversation that has to happen in the middle, and it doesn't necessarily mean that they have to go from both ends,” Lara said.

The cricket legend pointed out the necessity for in-game communication between the players, ensuring that the strategy aligns with the match's demands. He stressed that success doesn't always come from attacking at both ends but rather from a balanced approach.

So far in the tournament, the Rohit-Kohli partnership has struggled, accumulating only 35 runs in the last three innings. Kohli has faced challenges, scoring single digits in the USA leg, while Sharma has shown impressive form, notably scoring 52 runs against Ireland.
