Why Mohammed Shami Couldn’t Deliver In IPL 2025 Despite Hard Work - SRH Coach Explains

Mohammed Shami, one of India’s top fast bowlers, had a tough time in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Shami didn’t perform as expected. He took only 6 wickets in 9 matches, and gave away runs at a very high rate (an economy of 11.23 runs per over).

Shami had missed the entire 2024 IPL season due to an ankle injury. Although he returned this year, he couldn’t find his old rhythm.

Despite his struggles, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori supported Shami. Speaking after a match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Vettori said,

“It is a long time ago that he played T20 cricket (IPL), so it always takes a little bit to acclimate back into it."

“The game has progressed very quickly over those 18 months since the last time he played for GT and was a Purple Cap winner. I just think the challenge is remaining consistent for him," Vettori said.

Vettori also explained that Shami was not bowling with his usual accuracy and consistency, something that made him one of the best in the past.

“I think that’s where he’s at his best when he hits that length, and probably just wasn’t at that metronomically best that we’ve seen in the past, and that’s partly a long layoff, that’s partly the game," he added.

“I know that he worked exceptionally hard and he was desperate to do well, but it just wasn’t quite his season, but there’s no reason why he can’t bounce back because of the quality of the bowler that he is," he said.

After recovering from ankle surgery in early 2024, Shami started feeling pain in his right knee, which also affected his game. He returned to domestic cricket, played in the Ranji Trophy, and performed well, taking 7 wickets in a match against Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, there were talks about Shami playing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, but he didn’t end up being selected. In 2025, he returned to India’s team in white-ball formats (ODIs and T20Is) and even played in all five matches of the Champions Trophy, where India won the title.

Even though he played those international matches and 9 games in the current IPL season, he hasn’t played any red-ball (first-class) cricket this year.
