The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is set to host a blockbuster contest this evening as Mumbai Indians (MI) lock horns with Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 63rd group-stage match of the IPL 2025 season. With both teams still in the hunt for a playoffs berth, the stakes could not be higher but unfortunately, neither could the rain threat.

The match, scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM IST, is a virtual knockout. MI, led by Hardik Pandya, currently hold the fourth spot on the points table with 14 points, while Delhi Capitals trail closely behind in fifth place with 13 points. A win for either side would boost their playoff chances significantly, while a loss for DC would seal their exit from the tournament.

According to weather updates from AccuWeather.com and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dark clouds and heavy rain could play spoilsport. Mumbai has been experiencing thunderstorms and lightning since Tuesday evening, and the weather is expected to remain volatile throughout Wednesday.

Forecasts suggest high probability of thunderstorms and rainfall around the scheduled match time. While the chance of precipitation during the day is at 80%, it slightly eases to 25% in the evening. However, 99% cloud cover and thunderstorm probability of 50% during match hours raise serious concerns about whether a full 20-over contest will be possible.

A yellow alert has been issued for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), cautioning residents about heavy rainfall and high-speed wind gusts up to 20 km/h. Temperatures are expected to hover between 27°C and 34°C throughout the day.

Playoffs Equation And Potential Rain Impact

The weather forecast adds another layer of unpredictability to an already high-pressure match. Delhi Capitals, who started their IPL 2025 campaign strongly, have seen a dip in form and are now facing a must-win scenario. A loss would eliminate them from playoff contention.

For MI, a win would solidify their position in the top four. However, a washout could complicate things. If rain prevents any play, both teams will share a point each taking MI to 15 and DC to 14 points. In that scenario, both sides will have to win their respective final league matches  against Punjab Kings to stay in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs.
