Ahead of India's first Test match against Bangladesh, starting on September 19 in Chennai, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad. Among the notable names included were KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan, sparking discussions about the playing XI.

Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth has voiced his opinion on the situation, offering support for both players while analysing the possible team dynamics.

Srikkanth Feels Bad For Sarfaraz Khan

Srikkanth expressed his empathy for Sarfaraz Khan, acknowledging the tough competition for spots in the team. On his YouTube channel, Srikkanth mentioned how the return of a prominent player like KL Rahul can result in others losing their spot.

He specifically pointed to Sarfaraz and Dhruv Jurel as players who, despite their potential, might have to make way for returning stars like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

"Honestly, I feel bad for Sarfaraz Khan. But, this happens, at times, in Test cricket. You would have been playing well but when a big player returns, you will have to lose your place. Take for instance, Rishabh Pant is returning because of which Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan are losing their places. KL Rahul is coming in," Srikkanth said.

Why KL Rahul is Backed

KL Rahul has been an integral part of India’s Test setup for the past few years. With 50 Test matches under his belt, Rahul's experience and overseas performances, especially in Australia, make him a valuable asset.

Srikkanth believes the team management is keeping an eye on upcoming series, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a tour by New Zealand, where Rahul’s international experience is crucial. "KL Rahul has performed well overseas, especially in Australia,"  said Srikkanth.

Duleep Trophy 2024 Performances

Both Rahul and Sarfaraz participated in the Duleep Trophy 2024. While Rahul registered respectable scores of 37 and 57, Sarfaraz had a mixed outing, with a low score in the first innings but a brisk 46 in the second.
