Team India, boosted with centuries from attacking opener Virender Sehwag and cunning number four Rahul Dravid, racked up 281-8 from 50 overs in the first match of their home ODI series against Pakistan back in early-2005. While Sehwag flogged 108 runs from 95 balls with nine boundaries and three sixes under sweltering Kochi heat at the Nehru Stadium, Dravid bided his time to make a tireless 104 off 139 deliveries.
Sachin Tendulkar, who failed with the bat, blew away Pakistan’s lower-half with the ball to record only his second ODI five-fer with figures of 5-50 from 10 overs. Tendulkar’s five-wicket haul also included the prized-scalps of Inzamam-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridi as India skittled the ‘Men in Green’ for just 194 to secure the early series-lead by 87 runs.

Openers Gautam Gambhir (62 off 62) and Virender Sehwag (89 off 76) listed dazzling half-centuries in their monumental 155-run partnership before Yuvraj Singh took over the run-scoring onus with a near run-a-ball 55. Captain MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina also cracked valuable 20s in the backend of the innings to consign each Pakistani bowler to go above five runs an over.
In a bid to extend their 12-match winning streak, Pakistan crumbled for just 190 in a chase of 331 to fall 140 runs short of their target. New-ball operator Praveen Kumar and ace spinner Piyush Chawla collected four wickets each to headline India’s record win.

A potential blockbuster showdown turned out to be a mismatch of epic proportions when Team India crossed paths with Pakistan in the ninth match of the 2023 Asia Cup in Colombo. Batting first after losing the toss, the Indian team carted a king-size total of 356-2 from 50 overs. Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill belted identical half-centuries against Shaheen Afridi and co. before their successive dismissals flagged Virat Kohli and comeback man KL Rahul to command the remainder of the Indian innings.
The two cricketers ended up sharing an unbroken 233-run partnership from 194 balls, where a late-acceleration helped Kohli notch up a scintillating 122*. Rahul also slapped a turbulent 106* with 12 boundaries and two sixes and took a special liking to Shaheen Afridi and Faheem Ashraf in the slog overs.
Later in the run-chase, Kuldeep Yadav (5/25) made lightwork of Pakistan’s lower-order after early strikes from Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya as Indian bowlers bulldozed Pakistan for just 128 in 32 overs. Pakistan’s lower-order collapse ensured Team India walked away with a colossal 228-run win.
