Rohit Sharma was jubilant even upon his return to India over the historic Test match triumph in Cape Town. As Team India secured a series-levelling win in Newlands against South Africa after facing great criticism and pressure on the back of an innings defeat in Centurion, their captain celebrated the winning start to the year 2024.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Rohit posted the image of sharing the prestigious Gandhi-Mandela Trophy with his Proteas counterpart Dean Elgar on Thursday (January 4) after winning the riveting New Year's Test played on a treacherous surface at the iconic Newlands Stadium.

Team India pulled off one of their most special overseas wins on this occasion, exhibiting tremendous skill and temperament in bouncing back mentally from the battering received at the hands of the hosts in the Boxing Day Test played the previous week.

Rohit Jubilant Over New Year's Test Win

Defeated by an innings and 32 runs inside three days, Rohit's men came back to haunt the Proteas in the shortest Test match ever played on an excessively grassy surface designed by the home team to curtail the Indian wings.

Dean Elgar & company fell in the hole they had dug for the tourists after fiery spells and six-wicket hauls from Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah and valiant contributions from the right-handed trio of Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul gave India the ascendancy.

Rohit had extra reasons to feel delighted over the great win as he contributed a prizeless knock of 39 off 50 versus the new-ball on Day 1 and produced another brilliant cameo of 16 not out in the final innings of the Test match.

It was Rohit's first win as Test captain in the SENA countries and also India's first-ever victory in Cape Town in seven attempts, having suffered defeats on four out of the six instances they had previously travelled to the scenic venue.
