Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has taken up the “challenge” of leaving the Multan Sultans franchise in profit for the whole ‘world to see’ before selling it off again later this year. It is worth noting that Multan Sultans ex-owner Ali Tareen announced that he would not be renewing his contract with the franchise, prompting the PCB to officially take over the entire operational control of the team.
With no proper owner at the helm apart from PCB’s provisional leadership, Multan Sultans will be expected to be put up for sale in a year.
PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi wants to prove Ali Tareen wrong
A couple of months ago, Multan Sultans’ Ali Tareen announced that he would not be extending his ownership contract with the franchise citing repeated financial losses. Tareen’s surprising announcement at the last hour prompted the PCB to take control of the franchise ahead of the upcoming PSL 2026 season.
Shortly after the PCB added two more franchises to the league’s roaster, board chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that he refused to sell the Multan Sultans straightaway because he has taken up the “challenge” of showing PSL team ownership as a “plus-plus business” for all.
While speaking with the reporters, Mohsin Naqvi said, “I took a challenge, and that is that there were a lot of claims on social media that the team was in losses. So, I, and all of the team, decided that we will show you how much profit this business offers, publish the numbers before going for the auction. The pressure has started to be built up on me to sell out the team.”
PSL 2026 to begin from March 23
Mohsin Naqvi added that he wants the PCB to operate Multan Sultans for a year before leaving it in profit for new potential bidders. He stated, “But my wish is to operate Multan Sultans for one year, and I'm very much hopeful that we would leave it in profit so the world gets to know that it's a plus-plus business.”
The PSL 2026 season is scheduled to be played between March 23 and May 3, thus running concurrently with India’s IPL 2026.
