Four down for 110 at one stage, the New Zealand side recovered very well to post a daunting target of 289 on the board against Afghanistan courtesy of star batter Glenn Phillips and stand-in skipper Tom Latham, who smashed 71 and 68, respectively, to help their team earn a massive 149-run victory in the end in the World Cup 2023.

Phillips, after his incredible rescue innings that saved the Kiwis, asserted that he is quite content with the kind of effort they have put in, considering they were playing on a dusty track.

He further revealed that they were expecting to score 60 runs off the last six overs, but in fact, it turned out they managed to find 78 of the final six overs with the help of Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner in the back end of the innings.

"The Afghanistan spinners are incredibly talented and strong. Was really pleasing to see me and Tom go well in the middle after losing a few early. It was really good the way we batted here, especially on a dusty track here. Was great how we were able to take it down till the end and get the runs. We thought we’d be able to get 60 off the last 6 if we both were out there. The way Chapman and Santner finished it off was amazing."

Striking four fours and as many maximums, Glenn was confident that 250 would have been par on this wicket, which meant they were expecting some extra runs in the final overs.

Speaking on the team dynamics, the right-hander expressed his satisfaction with being able to perform alongside his teammates, where they support each other really well in challenging pressure situations, knowing each other's strengths and weaknesses.

"Thought that around 250 would’ve been par. We’re in an environment where we keep working for each other and play as a team. It’s about understanding what you can do for your mate and him understanding what he can do for you. We understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses really well."

Afghanistan were not able to bear the quality of the Kiwi bowling attack as they surrendered on 139, with Lockie Ferguson and Santner grabbing three wickets each.

The BlackCaps, after this confident victory, will be moving ahead to Dharamsala to play against the hosts India on 22nd October, with both sides undefeated as of now.
