India pacer Mohammed Shami has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay ₹4 lakh every month as alimony. This amount will be split between his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their daughter.
The court ordered that ₹1.5 lakh should be given to Jahan, while ₹2.5 lakh must go to their daughter. This ruling comes after a long legal fight that began in 2018, when the couple separated.
Hasin Jahan Says The Money Is Not Enough
Even though the court's decision brings some relief, Hasin Jahan says the amount is much lower than what they had asked for. She revealed that they demanded ₹10 lakh per month, considering Shami’s income and lifestyle.
“I am thankful to God that I finally got victory after fighting such a long battle… Now I will be able to give my daughter a good education and maintain her life easily… If you see the life Shami leads, the status he maintains, his earnings, this amount is nothing in comparison to that… We had demanded Rs 10 lakhs from the court around seven years ago. Since then, Shami’s income and inflation have both increased," Jahan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan got married in 2014 and had a daughter in 2015. However, the relationship fell apart in 2018. That year, Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence and cheating.
She even posted screenshots online, claiming they were of Shami’s chats with other women. She also alleged that Shami and his family tried to harm her, which led her to file an official police complaint.
Jahan’s Lawyer Hints At Higher Amount In Future
Hasin Jahan's lawyer, Imtiaz Ahmed, welcomed the court's interim order and mentioned that the final alimony amount could increase. He said that Jahan originally asked for ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for the daughter.
He believes that after the full hearing in the trial court, the amount might be raised to ₹6 lakh or more. The High Court has directed the lower court to complete the final judgment within six months.
So far, Mohammed Shami has not made any public comment about the court's decision.
