Indian Captain Shubman Gill lit up Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston with a sublime exhibition of batting, bringing up his seventh Test century in commanding fashion. Setting the tone early, it was an innings full of composure and flair, keeping India in the game with assured strokeplay.

The English bowlers were left searching for answers as Gill's calm dominance and precise shot selection gave India a solid finish towards the end of Day 1. As he raised his bat, it was not just for a hundred; it was a statement that rewrote several records, as listed below.

Second Joint Most 100s for India in Tests at the age of 25 or less

Shubman Gill's seventh Test century places him joint-second for most Test centuries by an Indian aged 25 or less. He joins Virender Sehwag and Ravi Shastri, all with seven tons in the list, which is led by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a staggering 19 Test centuries before turning 26.

Third Most 100s for India in all-formats at the age of 25 or less

Shubman Gill’s seventh Test century also marks his 16th international ton for India, placing him third in the list of most centuries for India in all formats at the age of 25 or less. He stands behind only Virat Kohli, who had 26 centuries, and the incomparable Sachin Tendulkar, with 40, highlighting Gill's rapid rise in all formats for India.

Fifth Instance of a Player scoring Centuries in 3 Successive Tests for India vs England

Shubman Gill’s century at Edgbaston is the fifth instance of an Indian player scoring centuries in three consecutive Tests against England. He had signed off the previous series with a century in Dharamshala, began this tour with another at Headingley, and now added a third at Edgbaston.

Mohammad Azharuddin (1984-85), Dilip Vengsarkar (1985-1986), Rahul Dravid (2002) and Rahul Dravid (2008-11) are the previous five instances of this rare feat against England.

Third Indian Captain to score consecutive 100s for India against England

Shubman Gill's two consecutive centuries in this series made him only the third Indian skipper to hit hundreds in consecutive Test matches against England. He joins an elite list featuring Vijay Hazare, who did it in Delhi and Brabourne in 1951–52, and Mohammad Azharuddin at Lord's and Old Trafford in 1990.

Fourth Indian Captain to score 100s in First Two Tests as Captain

Shubman Gill lit up both of his first two Tests as captain with commanding centuries, becoming only the fourth Indian Test captain to achieve this rare feat. He joins the elite company of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli as the only Indian captains to score hundreds in each of their first two Test matches as captain.

Hundreds in Joint Third Most Tests from Captaincy Debut

Shubman Gill now has centuries in two Test matches since taking over as captain, the joint-third most by any player after a captaincy debut. The list is led by Alastair Cook, who scored centuries in his first five Tests as England captain.

Australia's Steve Smith is second with hundreds in his first three Tests as captain. Gill is number three alongside names like Jackie McGlew, Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli, who all had hundreds in their first two consecutive Tests as skippers.

Second Indian Captain to score Test 100 at Edgbaston

Shubman Gill is now only the second Indian captain to score a Test century at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The first was Virat Kohli, who played one of the finest knocks of his career at the same venue in 2018.
