Struggling opener David Warner is set to retire from Tests following the conclusion of Australia’s forthcoming home series against Pakistan.

Pakistan paceman Shaheen Afridi, who is already in Perth for the highly anticipated opening Test, recently commended Warner for his illustrious international career. The speedster also humorously remarked that he hopes the dynamic Australian opener does not have a memorable farewell series with the bat against his team.

Shaheen Afridi jokes about Warner’s final series

Pakistan pace maverick Shaheen Afridi is hopeful that David Warner will have a subdued farewell Test series against them as both sides prepare to clash this December. While speaking with the reporters in Perth, Afridi praised Warner for his illustrious journey in international cricket spanning all formats.

The 23-year-old Pakistani paceman, who shares a good camaraderie with Warner as evidenced from their friendly exchanges during their 2022 Test series in Pakistan, also jokingly claimed that he is hoping the outbound star retires on a silent note. He said:

“David Warner's had a great career, he's a wonderful guy. It's his last series but hopefully not a good one against us.”

The upcoming series marks Pakistan’s first set of international fixtures since the conclusion of last month’s World Cup 2023 in India. During Pakistan’s blockbuster showdown against Australia in the tournament, Warner scored a sizzling 163 from just 124 balls against Shaheen Afridi and co. to win it for his side.

The Australian opening batsman boasts of a staggering Test record against Pakistan, especially in home conditions. Back in late 2019, during Pakistan’s previous Test trip ‘Down Under’, Warner bludgeoned 489 runs in just two innings, and registered his career-best score of 335* in the second Test to star in Australia’s 2-0 triumph over their visitors.

The imminent first Test, meanwhile, will commence at Perth Stadium on December 14. The three-match series also constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
