The intertwining of some of India’s most revered cricketers with political parties reflects a growing trend of leveraging their stature for vested political interests across the nation.

Mere weeks after politicians like Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee leveraged Team India’s crushing defeat at the 2023 World Cup final, prominent political party Indian National Congress have now monopolized Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni to their own advantage in the wake of Chhattisgarh’s polling results.

Congress shares MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli memes

Political party Indian National Congress (INC) took to their social media accounts and shared hilarious memes on veteran Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni amidst Chhattisgarh elections. The party shared pictures of the two former Indian captains, alongside weathered-down lookalikes with an astute caption aimed at seeking votes.

Notably, this is not the first instance of Indian politicians using cricket as a tool for their own advantage in recent weeks. Following India’s humiliating defeat to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee claimed that the ‘Men in Blue’ would have won the title if the final was held in Bengal instead.

Moreover, Uttar Pradesh opposition leader Akhilesh Yadav made a similar statement, stating that the Indian team would have received lord Ekana’s blessings if the final was held in Lucknow’s Ekana stadium over Ahmedabad.

Cricketers like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, meanwhile, continue to distance themselves from politics. Dhoni himself has shown no interest in joining any political party even after making his exit from international cricket more than three years ago.
