Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has clarified why some of his teammates were loading their own luggage at Canberra Airport upon their arrival in Australia.

The Pakistan cricket team recently landed in Australia for a three-match Test series against the hosts. Interestingly, the players received no VIP treatment upon their arrival, with neither Pakistan embassy nor Cricket Australia officials attending the airport to welcome them. Moreover, several notable players like Mohammad Rizwan were seen loading their own luggage into a truck outside the air strip.

The scenes, spotted on camera, received widespread outrage from several Pakistan cricket fans, as they expressed their dismay at Cricket Australia for the lack of hospitality and support for their national team.

Shaheen Afridi clarifies self-luggage loading

Pakistan pace maverick Shaheen Afridi recently clarified his teammates’ stance of loading their own luggage inside the truck at Canberra Airport. The 23-year-old speedster claimed that they were attended by just two officials for assistance, and in order to catch up with their subsequent flight in 30 minutes time the players decided to help out with their own luggage. Afridi said:

“We only had 30 minutes to catch our next flight and we helped load our own luggage because there were just two people. We wanted to wrap it up fast and to save time.”

The Pakistan cricket team is due to play a four-day warm-up match in Canberra’s Manuka Oval against Prime Minister’s XI from December 6 till December 9.

The ‘Men in Green’ players, under new Test skipper Shan Masood, will then travel to the Perth Stadium for the first Test of their three-match series, scheduled to commence on December 14.

The series serves as Pakistan’s first set of international fixtures since the conclusion of their disastrous World Cup 2023 run in India. Moreover, the matches also constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
