India started their series against Australia with a win, clinching the one-off Test, however, they were handed a six-wicket thumping in the first ODI of the three-match series at Wankhade on Thursday.

Batting first courtesy of Jemimah Rodrigues and Pooja Vastrakar's 82 and 62*, respectively, India managed to put up a stiff 283-run target for Australia, which the visiting side managed to overcome with ease after 70s from both Phoebe Litchfield and Ellyse Perry.

The duo added 148 runs for the second wicket, which considerably took the match out of India's reach.

Despite posting their highest-ever ODI score, a poor fielding performance in the field saw the Australian batter score easy runs forcing India to suffer a defeat.

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in the post-match presentation also spoke about how lacklustre fielding let the bowling down, which played its part to perfection despite dew.

Here's what Kaur said

"We managed to get a defendable total. Bowlers did their job but fielding didn't work well. After a while dew was there, but bowlers did well to keep stumps in play.  But I was unhappy with our fielding, Australia were amazing saving runs. Pooja was great. We need to back ourselves and play aggressive cricket."

Team India will need to pull up their socks and raise their fielding standards further if they want to stay alive in the series and eventually win the ODI leg.

The second match will be played tomorrow (December 30) and will be held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, which is hosting all matches.
